ABMS Appoints Laura Skarnulis as New COO
CHICAGO – February 21, 2013 – American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the not-for-profit organization that oversees physician certification in the United States, has appointed Laura L. Skarnulis as the organization’s new Chief Operating Officer (COO). She will officially assume her role on March 29.
Skarnulis brings 25 years of financial and operational experience to ABMS from a variety of industries. Most recently, she served as chief operating officer for United Way of Metropolitan Chicago. Prior to that, Skarnulis held executive management positions with the Arena Football League as well as various financial positions with World Book Publishing and Grant Thornton.
As COO, Skarnulis will serve as ABMS’ senior financial executive responsible for all aspects of the organization's finances as well as executive responsibilities for human resources, product management, information services, business planning and development, communications and meeting services and facilities.
“As a member of the executive team, Laura will be a critical player in supporting the effective and efficient operation of ABMS and its subsidiaries, as well as in the development of business and financial strategies and plans both nationally and internationally.” said Lois Margaret Nora, MD, JD, MBA, President and CEO of ABMS. “Her experience, management and leadership skills will be valuable assets to ABMS.”
Skarnulis received her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She is a resident of Downers Grove.
