David Price, MD, Named Director of the
Multi-Specialty Portfolio Approval Program
CHICAGO – June 9, 2014 – The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a leading organization that oversees physician Board Certification in the United States, is pleased to announce that David Price, MD, FAAFP, FACEHP, was named Director of the Multi-Specialty Portfolio Approval Program (Portfolio Program).
In this position, Dr. Price will lead the development of the strategic direction and plan for the Portfolio Program, which offers a pathway for health care organizations to support physician involvement in quality improvement (QI) initiatives and provide physicians from multiple specialties the opportunity to receive credit in their Programs for Maintenance of Certification (MOC). He also will direct the program’s evaluation and research efforts and provide support for Portfolio Sponsors as well as identify and evaluate key areas for program growth.
Dr. Price, a Board Certified family physician who has been with the Colorado Permanente Medical Group (CPMG) since 1988, will remain its Director of Medical Education. In addition, Dr. Price is a physician investigator with the Kaiser Permanente Colorado Institute of Health Research where he also is Co-director of the Center for Health Education, Dissemination and Implementation Research. Additionally, Dr. Price is the Director of Medical Education for The Permanente Federation and the Kaiser Permanente Care Management Institute in Oakland, Calif., as well as a Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine.
In addition, Dr. Price currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the American Board of Family Medicine Foundation, and is Chair-elect of the Association of American Medical Colleges section on Continuing Education and Improvement. From 2003 to 2008, Dr. Price served on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), where he chaired the Research and Development, and Examination (MOC) committees, and was ABFM Board Chair from 2007 to 2008. Dr. Price also has been active in the Colorado and American Academies of Family Physicians.

"His involvement in the ABMS Member Boards Community, leadership in medical education, and experience with the Portfolio Program will help move this important program forward."
The Portfolio Program offers a streamlined approach for organizations that sponsor and support multiple well-designed QI efforts involving physicians across multiple disciplines to work with ABMS Member Boards in order to obtain MOC Part IV credit. Currently, there are 18 ABMS Member Boards and 32 Portfolio Sponsors participating in the program. To date, more than 500 QI projects have been approved and nearly 3,300 physicians have received MOC Part IV credit for their participation.
