Dr. John Clarkson is Secretary-Treasurer of the ABMS Board of Directors and Chair of the ABMS Finance and Audit Committee. He is a nationally-distinguished practitioner, researcher and educator with a celebrated career in ophthalmology spanning more than 40 years. Dr. Clarkson is Executive Director and CEO of the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABOp) and Dean Emeritus and Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Dr. Clarkson’s research interests have led to significant roles in projects funded by the National Eye Institute and the National Institutes of Health. He has authored or co-authored more than 60 published works.
After obtaining an undergraduate degree from Princeton University, Dr. Clarkson received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed internship training at University Hospital in Boston and his residency training at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Following residency training, he completed fellowship training at The Johns Hopkins University in medical retinal diseases, ophthalmic pathology and vitreoretinal surgery.
Dr. Clarkson continues a medical retina practice at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He is Board Certified by ABOp.
