Immediate Past Chair

Dr. Thomas Norris is Immediate Past Chair of the ABMS Board of Directors (BOD). He most recently served as Board Chair from 2012-2014. Dr. Norris was first elected to the BOD in 2005. From 2006-2008, he served as Chair of the ABMS Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Task Force and was elected to the ABMS Executive Committee in 2008. In 2000, Dr. Norris was elected to the BOD of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and served as ABFM President from 2004-2005. He has served as President of both the Montana and Washington Academies of Family Physicians.

A well-known authority in family medicine, Dr. Norris has served as Vice Dean for Academic Affairs and in several other deans’ roles at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He currently serves as Professor and Chair of Family Medicine, as well as Adjunct Professor of biomedical informatics and medical education, global health, and health services. Dr. Norris continues to practice and teach family medicine, and his research efforts are focused on rural health, medical education, the education of family physicians, procedures in family medicine, and the use of telemedicine and medical informatics in primary care settings.

Dr. Norris received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, and completed his residency training in family practice at St. Joseph's Hospital, Kansas University School of Medicine, Wichita. He is Board Certified by ABFM and is meeting MOC requirements.
