Health Services Researcher

Incumbent:    None                                                              

Reports to:     Program Director, Research and Development

This position will serve a principal role in the design, conduct, and evaluation of research related to physician specialty certification and the ABMS Maintenance of Certification® (ABMS MOC®) program and will also play a key role in the development and/or evaluation of activities related to physician performance measurement, patient safety initiatives, quality improvement initiatives and educational activities.  This position will interface with the ABMS Member Boards and committees, ABMS Associate Member organizations, the health services research community, foundations and agencies that fund health service research, vendors and other professionals.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee the design and conduct of research related to physician specialty certification and maintenance of certification including collaborations on existing projects and development and implementation of new projects in accordance with the research goals set forth by the ABMS Committee on Research and Evaluation Procedures
  • Participate in strategic planning for the ABMS Research and Education Foundation, serving a lead role in shaping programmatic expansion
  • Lead the design and implementation of collaborative studies involving multiple boards
  • Serve an advisory role to Member Boards seeking to design and implement specialty-specific studies
  • Serve as Principal Investigator in the pursuit and implementation of extramurally funded projects
  • Employ quantitative and qualitative methods in the design and conduct of evaluation studies of quality improvement activities, patient safety initiatives and other activities related to physician assessment
  • Guide and monitor project staff in the conduct of basic quantitative and qualitative analyses    
  • Develop research design templates for evaluation of ABMS MOC program activities
  • Lead cross/board teams in manuscript development and submission to leading peer –reviewed journals
  • Present findings to ABMS leadership and committees as well as external organizations
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of performance measures, assuming a lead role in the development and implementation of testing protocols to evaluate measures for use in MOC
  • Educate Member Boards and ABMS committees on topics related to health services research and outcomes evaluation through workshops, webinar lectures
  • Present findings of related research to various national audiences

EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE

  • Doctoral degree in social sciences, public health, or health services research or an M.D. with additional training or experience in one or more of these areas  
  • Minimum of 5+ years of post-graduate work experience
  • Strong project management experience
  • Track record of extramurally funded research
  • Background in either health care quality,  patient safety, or medical education research
  • Experience in evaluating QI tools or programs in various health care settings
  • Thorough knowledge and use of various research methods, including both quantitative and qualitative analyses  
  • Practical experience in the development or application of performance measures, performance improvement techniques
  • Experience with statistics and programming with statistical packages (such as SAS or STATA)
  • Experience working with physicians/physician volunteers/medical executives

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Hours:  37.5 hours per week, M-F, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.   

Travel: Travel and evening hours are required periodically.

Manager of MOC Support Program

Incumbent: OPEN

Reports to: Vice President for MOC Educational and Support Programs
  Senior Vice President for Professional and Scientific Affairs

Responsibilities:

Overall responsibilities are to facilitate and manage many of the administrative, outreach, and governance components of the MOC Support Program -- relevant committees, working groups, design teams, external stakeholders, ABMS Member Boards leadership and staff, and ABMS staff. 

Administration & Operations

  • Assume primary responsibility for all MOC-related committees and other MOC-related ad hoc or permanent groups by developing agendas, identifying resources, and preparing supplemental materials to aid decision-making and standard-setting processes.
  • Utilize a project-management approach to ensure that all MOC-related committees and other associated projects are conducted in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Assist in the compiling of findings from existing and pilot projects, the collecting of project progress reports, and the summarizing and disseminating of project data.
  • Oversee logistics and provide guidance for the MOC Network (through conference calls and webinars) in order to facilitate the on-going sharing of MOC information across the Board Enterprise.
  • Assist ABMS physician volunteers, ABMS Member Boards staff, and ABMS staff in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of workshops and other educational activities related to the MOC Support Program. 
  • Assist ABMS Member Boards and ABMS staff in the identification and evaluation of internal and external resources for the MOC Support Program.
  • Facilitate the compiling of findings from existing and pilot projects, the collecting of project progress reports, and the summarizing and disseminating of project data.
  • Work with IT staff to maintain and update information of the MOC Support Program and related committees, task forces, and joint working groups on the Portal.
  • Perform administrative tasks as required (scanning, photocopying, etc).

Education, Training and Experience:

  • Master’s degree preferred.  A bachelor’s degree required (in Education, Public Health or Public Policy preferred) or equivalent experience.    
  • Minimum of 2- 5 years of work experience involving committee support and governance.
  • Minimum of 3 - 5 years of work experience in medical education setting(s), medical research setting(s), medical association setting(s), and/or continuing medical education setting(s).    
  • Solid proficiency with MS Office Products.
  • Experience working with physicians/physician volunteers/medical executives.
  • Experience working in an accreditation setting is a plus.

Additional Information

Hours:37 .5 hours per week, M-F, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.   Limited weekends.

Travel: Travel may be required.
