ABMS Applauds FSMB’s Proposed Interstate Medical Licensure Compact

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) applauds the efforts of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) to streamline the licensing process for physicians who want to practice in multiple states. Under its proposed Interstate Medical Licensure Compact, qualified physicians would be eligible for expedited licensure in all states participating in the voluntary compact. While participating state medical boards would retain their licensing and disciplinary authority, they would agree to share information and processes essential to the licensing and regulation of physicians who practice across state borders. Among the criteria for expedited licensure is Board Certification in a medical specialty, which exceeds current state licensing requirements. ABMS is pleased that FSMB recognizes Board Certification as a quality marker and has included it among its criteria for this Compact that could increase care access to patients across the country and in particular in rural and underserved areas.
