Dartmouth-Hitchcock Joins ABMS Multi-Specialty Portfolio Approval Program

Physicians to Obtain Maintenance of Certification Credit for Engaging in Quality Improvement Initiatives

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has announced that Dartmouth-Hitchcock (D-H) has joined the ABMS Multi-Specialty Portfolio Approval Program™ (Portfolio Program). D-H physicians who are Board Certified by one of 21 of the 24 ABMS Member Boards participating in the Portfolio Program may now receive Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Improvement in Medical Practice (Part IV) credit for their engagement in quality improvement work at the health system.

A nonprofit, academic health system, D-H serves a patient population of 1.9 million throughout New England. Anchored by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, the organization includes a comprehensive cancer center; the state's only comprehensive, full-service children's hospital; 30 outpatient clinic locations; and three affiliate hospitals. The D-H Portfolio Program has the potential to offer MOC credit to over 900 Board Certified physicians throughout the entire D-H system. The D-H Portfolio Program will be led administratively by the D-H Center for Learning and Professional Development, working with the Analytics Institute and the Value Institute to provide the data and quality improvement resources needed to support and complete D-H designated quality improvement activities. The Value Institute serves as a central function to efficiently and effectively serve the quality and improvement needs system-wide, working collaboratively to support individuals and groups working on performance improvement projects across D-H. The Analytics Institute is a centralized resource dedicated to advancing the mission, vision, and goals of the organization through enhanced data and analytic capabilities.

The strategic alliance of self-assessment, data analytics, and quality improvement represents a gold standard for physician continuing education. As our physician-based and health system influenced quality improvement initiatives evolve, we aim to simultaneously increase quality and decrease unnecessary costs associated with health care delivery,” said Brian Sites, MD, MS, Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education and Medical Director, Center for Learning and Professional Development at D-H.

Dr. Sites noted that “This is an exciting opportunity for D-H to collaborate with ABMS and our internal learning partners in providing a full service MOC program to our physicians. The Portfolio Program will allow our physicians to work individually or in teams and will follow the DMAIC framework (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control).

“ABMS and its 24 Member Boards are committed to offering practice relevant, rigorous MOC programming that aligns with the daily work of physicians,” explained David W. Price, MD, FAAFP, FACEHP, Executive Director of the Portfolio Program. “The Portfolio Program supports this by encouraging and recognizing meaningful physician engagement in quality improvement efforts with MOC credit. The Program’s ability to offer credits through collaboration with 21 participating Member Boards makes it possible for Board Certified physicians throughout the D-H system to receive MOC credit across a wide continuum of specialty and subspecialty practice areas.”

To date, the Portfolio Program has helped engage more than 8,000 physicians in practice improvement initiatives at hospitals and health systems across the country, many showing improvement in care outcomes, and has recognized their participation with MOC-eligible credit. Since its inception, more than 1,300 quality improvement efforts have been completed by Portfolio Program participants.
