The American Board of Plastic Surgery Joins ABMS Portfolio Program

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a leading organization that oversees physician Board Certification in the United States, is pleased to announce that the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) has joined the ABMS Multi-Specialty Portfolio Program (Portfolio Program) effective February 6, 2015. This now brings the total number of participating ABMS Member Boards to 20.

“The Portfolio Program offers a pathway for health care organizations to support physician involvement in organizational quality improvement (QI) initiatives and provide physicians from multiple specialties the opportunity to receive credit in their ABMS Programs for Maintenance of Certification (MOC),” said David W. Price, MD, FAAFP, FACEHP, Director, of the Portfolio Program. “The addition of the ABPS as a participating Portfolio Program specialty board is significant because it enables the growing list of Portfolio Program Sponsors to offer MOC credit in a new and important specialty area,” he added.

QI efforts involving ABPS certified physicians and QI efforts in the field of plastic surgery may now be submitted by approved Portfolio Sponsors for MOC credit. Barry Noone, MD, ABPS Executive Director, said, “The ABPS MOC program continually looks for opportunities to increase its relevance to the current practice of our diplomates. The Portfolio Program does this in a meaningful way and within the workplace setting of physicians. Diplomates who successfully complete an approved Portfolio Program QI effort receive credit for satisfying various components of our Part IV Practice Assessment Module.
