Chief Information Officer

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is seeking a Chief Information Officer.

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is the department head for the Information Services (IS) Department.  This position will report to the Chief Operating Officer and support and enhance information services and technology strategies that align with the mission and vision of ABMS.  The CIO will foster innovation, prioritize IS initiatives, coordinate the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future IS services.  The CIO creates, develops, and executes the strategy and policies of the organization related to data services, technology, infrastructure, and systems that support the organization. A key aspect will be supporting information technology solutions for credentialing, and certification-related requirements based on business goals and objectives. The IS Department has 11 members.

Established in 1933, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) is responsible for the creation of standards overseeing physician certification in the United States. Dedicated to improving the quality of care to the patients, families and communities they serve, the 24 ABMS Member Boards develop educational and professional standards and programs of assessment to certify physicians and medical specialists. More than 940,000 physicians and medical specialists are certified by one or more of the ABMS Member Boards in one or more 40 specialties and 88 subspecialties. Position Responsibilities

Strategic Planning

  • Develop and implement ABMS Information Services strategy to support the organization and to assist our Member Boards ensuring organizational Information Services.
  • Responsible for managing capital and operating budgets related to Information Services
  • Collaborate with Member Boards to understand their infrastructure and requirements, and partner with them in providing integration or shared solutions among ABMS, Member Boards, and/or third parties
  • Responsible for recommending solutions, communicating processes, and facilitating integration of software and hardware for ABMS
  • Advise the ABMS Executive Leadership Team on the integration with Member Boards and with relevant outside entities to meet business goals to support mission-related initiatives
  • Oversee ongoing improvements and the feasibility of system enhancements
  • Develop IS objectives to facilitate the orderly and efficient capture, storage, processing, and dissemination of information and optimize costs through an appropriate mix of internal and external resources
  • Support and enhance data analytics offerings to evaluate the value of certification and other initiatives

Operations Management

  • Lead and support staff of IS professionals
  • Oversee the work of the Chief Technology Officer and the IS team to ensure operational alignment with wider Member Board initiatives and outside entities
  • Oversee on-going enhancements of hardware and software as necessary to stay current and protect ABMS data and systems
  • Ensure the security of the information systems, communication lines, and equipment
  • Responsible for the development, review, and certification of all back-up and disaster recovery procedures and plans

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 10 year’s experience in Information Services or Information Technology field, of which at least 3 years in a senior level role, to include leading a department or team
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, with an advanced degree preferred
  • IS experience in healthcare or medical environments preferred
  • IS leadership in an association or non-profit preferred
  • Experience with SQL environments preferred

ABMS employees are currently working remotely, unless they choose to work in the office.  If an employee wishes to visit the office, the employee must be vaccinated against COVID-19 and must provide proof of vaccination upon request, subject to legal exemptions.  ABMS considers an employee to be vaccinated against COVID-19 if the employee has received the primary vaccine and one booster dose.  This policy may be revised at any time.

Salary and Benefits:  ABMS is offering a starting annual salary between $230,000 & $250,000 based on relevant experience. ABMS also offers a 37.50-hour work week; a comprehensive benefit package including 3 BCBS plan options; Flexible Medical & Dependent Care Spending Accounts, Heath Savings Accounts; Dental and Vision insurance; 401k with a 3% safe harbor match; discretionary annual bonus; and generous paid vacation program.

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, M-F, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Early morning, evening, and weekend hours may be periodically required. Some travel will be required.

The ABMS offices are located in Chicago and while Chicago area candidates will be preferred, we will consider candidates from outside the area. If the successful candidate is located outside the Chicago area, travel to Chicago and ABMS’s conferences & meetings would be periodically required.
