Vice-President, Policy and Public Affairs

The American Board of Medical Specialties is seeking a Vice-President, Policy and Public Affairs.

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) serves the public and the medical profession by improving the quality of health care through setting professional and educational standards for medical specialty practice and certification in partnership with its certifying Member Boards. These elevate the standards for patient care and care improvements. 

Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Policy and External Relations, the Vice-President, Policy and Public Affairs, provides strategic and operational oversight for ABMS policy development and strategic engagement with ABMS associate members, federal agencies, state medical boards, professional organizations, and other public stakeholders of specialty certification to strengthen and increase the value of ABMS specialty board certification. The role requires creativity to support and implement strategic objectives.

Position Responsibilities:

Policy

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to enhance the value of physician specialty certification to diplomates, consumers, and public stakeholders
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the ABMS Health Policy and Strategy Committee, preparing briefing materials and reports to the ABMS Board of Directors.
  • Monitor and comment on licensing board policy that may affect board certification.
  • Provide bill and rule analysis and policy research to support state and federal legislative and regulatory advocacy.
  • Support policy development to align ABMS board certification with state licensure, federal quality programs, and other public accountability initiatives related to specialty physician practice and performance.
  • Brief ABMS constituencies, governance, and leadership on significant environmental trends in health policy and physician quality regulation that affect certification.
  • Develop educational sessions for the ABMS Conference that address national and state health policy issues and trends relevant to physician assessment, regulation, and performance improvement.
  • Provide staff support and strategic direction to special committees and task forces to guide internal policy development.

Public Affairs

  • Develop and implement a plan for external engagement to increase awareness of certification and to enhance the value of continuing certification to the public and other beneficiaries of certification. 
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key industry, regulatory agency, and government stakeholders to enhance the value of continuing certification and increase recognition of ABMS Member Board certification as a mark of physician quality.
  • Explore strategic partnerships with external stakeholders and other organizations that may enhance certification programs.
  • Strengthen ABMS’s thought leadership on issues related to physician quality, specialty certification, and development of professional skills and performance.
  • Develop and implement mechanisms to obtain input from key stakeholders so that certification better meets stakeholder needs.
  • Manage engagement with ABMS Associate Members and other external partners to address strategic priorities.
  • Planning, program implementation, and operational management
  • Support the SVP with departmental strategy and contribute to ABMS strategic planning.
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to implement the plan and fulfill the responsibilities and functions of the department.
  • Manage and support professional development and performance of other team members.

Education and Experience

  • Advanced degree in public health, public policy, or related professional field. (Required)
  • 10 to15 years of experience in health policy, health services research, or policy development with progressive leadership responsibilities. (Required)
  • Familiarity with health services research, evaluation science, performance assessment, quality improvement, and regulation of health care quality and safety. (Preferred)
  • Experience in medical professional affairs or association management. (Preferred)
