Immediate Past Chair

Dr. Barry Smith is an Emeritus Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He previously served as the Interim Chair and Program Director for the Department. He served as the Chair of the Board of Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and was the ECFMG appointee to the USMLE Composite Committee. He has been at Baylor in Houston since 2005. He served as a Director of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He served on the Osteopathic Principles Committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) from 2015 to 2020.

In previous leadership roles, Dr. Smith was the Chair and Medical Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas from 1989 to 2005 and served as the Medical Director of the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Louisville, Kentucky from 1983 to 1985.

He has served as the President of both the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (1987–88) and the Association of Academic Physiatrists (1999–2001). He has received numerous national awards including the Frank H. Krusen Award and the Distinguished Member Award from the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Academic Physiatrists.

Dr. Smith was certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 1969. He is voluntarily recertified through 2029 and is currently meeting the requirements of the ABMS Maintenance of Certification® program for his board.
