Dr. Anne-Marie Irani currently serves as Professor of Pediatrics and Internal Medicine, in the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.

Dr. Irani’s research interests in the biology of human mast cells led her to identify two types of mast cells which differed in their composition of the neutral proteases tryptase and chymase. She helped characterize the distribution of these cell types in normal as well as diseased tissues. More recently, she has participated in numerous clinical trials for pediatric asthma, including the Severe Asthma Research Program of the NIAID.

Dr. Irani has served the specialty in numerous capacities. She was the Co-Director of the Allergy/Immunology training program at Virginia Commonwealth University for 26 years. She has served on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, as an Associate Editor of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, and as chair of the grant review committee as well as member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. She recently completed her term on the executive committee of the section on Allergy and Immunology for the American Academy of Pediatrics, and on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI). She is the current secretary treasurer for the Board of Directors of the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Dr. Irani holds general Board Certification from the ABAI and the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). She is meeting the requirements of the ABMS Maintenance of Certification® program for ABAI. Dr. Irani graduated from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, and completed fellowships in Allergy/Immunology as well as Pediatric Rheumatology at The Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopedic Institute in New York, The New England Medical Center in Boston and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
