Immediate Past Chair

Dr. John C. Moorhead serves as Immediate Past Chair of the ABMS Board of Directors (BOD). He has been a member of the ABMS BOD and its Research and Education Foundation Board since 2008. Dr. Moorhead has been a member of the Maintenance of Certification Committee, which he chaired from 2012 to 2014, and served on the Health and Public Policy Task Force.

A pioneer in emergency medicine training and advocacy, Dr. Moorhead is currently a Professor of Emergency Medicine, and Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland. In 1978, he joined OHSU’s Department of Emergency Medicine, of which he is now Chair Emeritus. During his 30-plus years in the department, Dr. Moorhead has held many positions including Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency program for 13 years and Department Chair for eight years.

He is a former President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Oregon Medical Association.

Dr. Moorhead received his medical degree from Queens University/Medical School in Kingston, Ontario. He graduated from the emergency medicine residency program at McGill University Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Dr. Moorhead also holds a Master of Science in Health Policy and Management Degree from New York University.

Dr. Moorhead is Board Certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and is meeting his Board’s requirements for the ABMS Program for Maintenance of Certification (ABMS MOC®).
