Chief Operating Officer
Ms. Laura Skarnulis joined ABMS in 2013, bringing 25 years of financial and operational experience from a variety of sectors. As Chief Operating Officer (COO), she provides strategic, business, and organizational leadership in support of the ABMS mission. Ms. Skarnulis leads the organization’s efforts to cultivate a culture throughout the ABMS community that values diversity, equity and inclusion. She champions and supports ABMS’s culture of open, welcomed feedback and engagement in which all staff have an opportunity and are encouraged and empowered to participate.
Ms. Skarnulis came to ABMS from United Way of Metropolitan Chicago where she served as COO and Chief Financial Officer (CFO). During her tenure, she streamlined operations, realigned resources and strengthened the organization’s financial foundation by increasing cash reserves, mitigating risk through the sale of high-risk long term assets and developing a multi-year pension funding strategy.
Previously, Ms. Skarnulis led the financial and business operations of the Arena Football League, an emerging national indoor football league, for nine seasons as CFO. Additionally, she served as a CFO consultant for both established and startup ventures in the Chicago area and spent seven years in a variety of finance roles with increasing responsibility at World Book Publishing. Ms. Skarnulis began her career as an auditor with Grant Thornton.
A Chicago native, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from Northern Illinois University and is certified as a Certified Public Accountant. In 2019, Ms. Skarnulis was named one of Crain’s Chicago Business “Notable Women in Health Care.” In 2012, she was named a finalist for “CFO of the Year” by Financial Executives International.
Ms. Skarnulis is and has been involved with numerous civic organizations, including the Chicago Finance Exchange (current Philanthropy Committee Member), former United Way of Illinois Treasurer and Board Member, Women in Sports and Events (Member and Mentor). Particularly passionate and committed to the professional and personal growth of women in business, she is the founder of an Intergenerational Women’s Network.
