Senior Advisor to the President and Interim Director of the ABMS Portfolio Program
Mellie Villahermosa Pouwels has the rare distinction of being a part of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) team twice, once from 2009-2014, and then a second time, from 2018 to the present.
Today, Ms. Pouwels serves as the Senior Adviser to the ABMS President and the Interim Director of the ABMS Portfolio Program™ that works with health care organizations to recognize the work physicians are already doing to improve their practices and the care of their patients. In addition, she oversees the ABMS Visiting Scholars Program™, a one-year, part-time program that positions early-career physicians and others with relevant advanced degrees as future health care leaders. She also supports the implementation of the Continuing Board Certification: Vision for the Future Commission’s report through the work of the Advancing Practice Task Force.
During her first tenure with ABMS, Ms. Pouwels held a variety of leadership roles, including Vice President for MOC Educational and Support Services and ultimately, Vice President of Academic Programs and Services. After five years with ABMS, she joined the American Medical Association as its Director of Medical Education Collaborations, where she provided leadership, direction and the managerial/financial oversight for a multi-institutional grant program and consortium. Her previous professional experience also includes roles with the Education Center of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and Missouri Area Health Education Centers.
Ms. Pouwels received her Master of Arts in Counseling from Loyola Marymount University and Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Notre Dame. She has taken graduate courses in Higher and Adult Education, Family and Community Medicine, and Health Services Management at the University of Missouri.
