Initiatives of the ABMS Research and Education Foundation
The ABMS Visiting Scholars Program is a one-year, part-time program which provides participants exposure to the fields of professional assessment and education, regulatory policy, and quality improvement while promoting research and scholarship in areas important to the ABMS Member Boards community.
The IPIP initiative, conceived in 2004 under the Foundation leadership, created models of practice support emulated in primary care practices throughout the United States. IPIP’s focus on smaller practices and its signature practice coaching model has helped participating practices in seven states improve outcomes for patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and asthma as well as preventive care for all patients.
In 2011, the Foundation received a subcontract from the National Program Office of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Aligning Forces for Quality initiative to work with many of the 16 AF4Q communities on ambulatory quality improvement initiatives based on the IPIP model.
Since 2011, the Foundation has been working with Brandeis University, the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute (HCI3®), the American Medical Association Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® and Booz Allen Hamilton to develop a prototype episode grouper system for use in implementing value-based purchasing within the Medicare population.
The Foundation and the American Board of Pediatrics are working with the Medical College of Wisconsin, Northwestern University, Truven Health Analytics, and the American Academy of Pediatrics to advance and improve health care quality for children enrolled in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. The project is funded through a cooperative agreement grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
