The 24 certifying boards or Member Boards of ABMS were founded by their respective specialties to assess and certify doctors who demonstrate the clinical judgment, skills, and attitudes essential for the delivery of excellent patient care. Our Member Boards community answers a public call to establish uniform standards for physicians to achieve and maintain board certification.
The boards are not membership societies. Each is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization whose accountability is both to the profession and to the public. The governing body of each board comprises specialists qualified in the particular field represented by that board. Members of the governing bodies include representatives from among the national specialty organizations in related fields.
Working with other professional organizations and agencies, the ABMS community elevates the standards for patient care and care improvements across specialties. This focus on continuous education and participation in national initiatives translates to innovations in clinical delivery that improve the health of communities across the nation, and enhancements to the quality of care each patient receives.
