ABMS Announces New Board of Directors (2016–2017)
John C. Moorhead, MD, MS, FACEP, to Chair ABMS Board
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a leading organization that oversees physician Board Certification and the ABMS Program for Maintenance of Certification (ABMS MOC®) in the United States, is pleased to announce the election of John C. Moorhead, MD, MS, FACEP, as the 36th Chair of its Board of Directors (BOD) at the ABMS BOD meeting held June 22-23 in Chicago. Other new Board Members elected at the meeting include a new Chair Elect, three new and six re-elected At-Large Members, and two new and two re-elected Board Members to serve on the Executive Committee.
Dr. John Moorhead has been a member of the ABMS BOD for many years, serving as Chair Elect since 2014. He is a member of multiple ABMS committees, including its Governance Committee and Health and Public Policy Committee. Currently, Dr. Moorhead is a Professor of Emergency Medicine, and Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland. In 1978, he joined OHSU’s Department of Emergency Medicine, of which he is now Chair Emeritus while continuing his emergency medicine clinical activities at OHSU and Doernbecher hospitals. During his 30-plus years in the department, Dr. Moorhead has held many positions including Director of the Emergency Medicine Residency program and Department Chair. He is a former President of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), American College of Emergency Physicians, and Oregon Medical Association. Dr. Moorhead is Board Certified by ABEM. Dr. Moorhead succeeds Valerie M. Parisi, MD, MPH, MBA, who served as ABMS BOD Chair from 2014 to 2016. She will now serve as Immediate Past Chair.
“John Moorhead is a proven leader who shares ABMS’ mission to improve the quality of health care through setting professional standards for lifelong certification in partnership with our Member Boards,” said Lois Margaret Nora, MD, JD, MBA, ABMS President and Chief Executive Officer. “As a pioneer in emergency medicine training and advocacy, he is well prepared to lead ABMS as we continue to refine and innovate our processes for initial certification and the equally important continuing certification.”
Replacing Dr. Moorhead as Chair Elect is Barry S. Smith, MD, who has served on the ABMS BOD since 2012 and currently serves on its Executive Committee. Dr. Smith is a member of the ABMS Multi-Specialty Portfolio Program’s BOD and serves on various ABMS committees. He served as a Director of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR) from 1999 to 2011. Dr. Smith is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston where he has worked since 2005. Previously, he served as the Interim Chair and Program Director for the Department. Before joining Baylor in Houston, Dr. Smith was the Chair and Medical Director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and served as the Medical Director of the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Louisville, Kentucky. He is past President of both the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the Association of Academic Physiatrists. Dr. Smith is Board Certified by ABPMR.
“Barry Smith’s involvement in the Member Boards Community dates back nearly two decades. During that time, he has been a well versed, passionate advocate of Board Certification and continuing certification. These characteristics, along with his record of outstanding contributions to the Boards Community, will serve him well in his new role as Chair Elect,” Dr. Nora said.

- Anthony Chiodo, MD − American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
- E. Sander Connolly, Jr., MD − American Board of Neurological Surgery
Re-elected ABMS Board Members are as follows:
- Pamela J. Boyers, MA, PhD − Public Member (Associate Vice Chancellor for Interprofessional Education, Clinical Simulation and Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, University of Nebraska Medical Center)
- Michael L. Carius, MD − American Board of Emergency Medicine
- Larry A. Green, MD − American Board of Family Medicine
- Anne-Marie Irani, MD − American Board of Allergy and Immunology
- Gerald H. Jordan, MD − American Board of Urology
- Eve Kurtin, PharmD − Public Member (Founding Managing Director, Pacific Venture Group)
In addition, the following Board Members will serve as new members on the ABMS Executive Committee:
- Larry A. Green, MD− American Board of Family Medicine (newly elected)
- Anne-Marie Irani, MD − American Board of Allergy and Immunology (re-elected)
- Rebecca L. Johnson, MD − American Board of Pathology (re-elected)
- Eve Kurtin, PharmD − Public Member (newly elected)
“Our Board of Directors oversee the long-term strategic plan for ABMS, enabling us to advance our mission, vision and strategic objectives, in partnership with our Member Boards,” Dr. Nora said. “They are distinguished individuals from all across the country, with a broad range of experience in patient care, health policy, business, and community service. ABMS could not serve the public and medical profession without the dedication and commitment of these volunteers, many of whom have demanding full-time careers outside of the work they do for us. Their hard work and time are greatly appreciated and valued by ABMS and the Boards Community.”
