ABMS Appoints New Member of Leadership Team
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a leading organization that oversees physician Board Certification in the United States, has appointed Nick Smith as Vice President of Strategic Implementation for Academic Affairs.
In the newly created Academic Affairs position, Mr. Smith will support the implementation of initiatives focused on improving the quality and safety of health care through the continuous professional development of physician specialists. He will help facilitate strategic management processes and provide consulting expertise and program management for specific initiatives within Academic Affairs that are important for the advancement of ABMS Member Board Certification and the ABMS Program for Maintenance of Certification (ABMS MOC®).
“Nick will be instrumental in implementing the myriad initiatives that ABMS is working on to identify and promote innovations in assessment and continuous professional development for Board Certified physician specialists,” noted Mira Irons, MD,Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Prior to joining ABMS, Mr. Smith was a co-founder of a Washington, DC-based consulting and software solutions firm and spent the past six years providing organizational leadership, strategic planning, operations, and compliance strategy services to various clients and industries. He also was a White House appointee and served as an Agency Chief of Staff for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security where Mr. Smith managed daily operations at the department’s largest investigative agency. Additionally, he was the Press Secretary/Deputy Chief of Staff to a former U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, MD, for seven years. In this role, Mr. Smith worked extensively on health care issues including the Medicare Modernization Act, health disparities, and other public health initiatives. He holds a bachelor’s degree in International Politics from Pennsylvania State University.
