ABMS Policy and Practice Webinar: Supporting Physicians Under MACRA
In 2015, Congress passed the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA), which leverages physician payment to drive quality improvement. The legislation will adjust physician payment based on quality scores, offering two pathways for participation: a merit-based incentive payment system (MIPS) and alternative payment models for physicians in integrated health systems.
The legislation provides opportunities for Member Boards and specialty societies to support physicians under the new model. MOC activities are recognized as a pathway to satisfy clinical practice improvement activities, and physician organizations have an opportunity to sponsor registries and create new measures in the system. CMS is required to consult with physician organizations in the implementation of the law, and has expressed its desire to work with specialty organizations to identify high-value specialty measures and activities.
On June 30, 2016, ABMS hosted a webinar featuring Drs. Daniel J. Cole, Robert L. Phillips, Jr., and William Thorwarth, Jr., highlighting the work that the American College of Radiology and the American Board of Family Medicine are doing to help physicians satisfy MACRA and MIPs requirements, and discussing opportunities for joint work to focus physician improvement activities to deliver high value.
