ABMS Statement on the 2017 Executive Order on Immigration
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has concerns about the impact the temporary Executive Order on Immigration will have on our country’s graduate medical education system, our national physician shortage, our ability to train and support the work of volunteer physicians across the globe, and most importantly, the potential to adversely impact patient care for Americans. ABMS, along with others in the medical community, seeks clarification and understanding of the long range immigration reform requirements and implications. We encourage an appreciation for and understanding of the unique and important role that foreign born medical students, researchers, educators, physicians and other health professionals have in the United States, and throughout the world.
Many physicians certified by one of the ABMS Member Boards will be impacted by the temporary Executive Order on Immigration. While an unintended consequence, the Order as written will limit our healthcare system’s ability to meet patients’ needs. ABMS and the greater Boards Community stand ready and willing to assist the Administration in creating policies that ensure patients and their families receive continued quality care.
