The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) announced at its Board of Directors meeting today that President and Chief Executive Officer Lois Margaret Nora, MD, JD, MBA will complete her term as the organization’s leader at the end of 2017.

“It has been my privilege and a pleasure to serve as the leader of ABMS, working with the 24 Member Boards and the greater professional community in our work on behalf of professional self-regulation,” stated Dr. Nora. “We have accomplished much together as a community, and I will miss the incredible team of professionals and physician volunteers with whom I have had the honor to serve with over the past five years. I have every confidence that the programs and initiatives we have implemented to evolve our continuing certification process will endure, as will the value and importance of Board Certification for the patients, families and communities that we serve as well as the profession.”

Assuming the role of President and Chief Executive Officer in 2012, Dr. Nora has been dedicated to her profession and to the importance of Board Certification in defining and establishing specialty and subspecialty standards both on behalf of the physician community as well as the public at large. A neurologist and former medical college dean, Dr. Nora brought her passion for medical education, collaboration and the importance of continuous learning and improvement to her role at ABMS. Among the many accomplishments under her leadership is the adoption and implementation of the 2015 Standards for the ABMS Program for Maintenance of Certification (MOC), enabling and encouraging ABMS Boards to explore and implement innovations in their MOC programs and processes. These standards paved the way for the host of innovations occurring throughout the Boards Community ranging from remote proctoring and open book testing, to increased access to MOC approved continuing medical education programs. In addition, her tenure saw the growth of the ABMS Multi-Specialty Portfolio Program which affords physicians the opportunity to obtain MOC credit for the quality improvement, practice improvement and patient safety activities in which they are already actively engaged at their hospitals, health systems and private practices. Most recently, Dr. Nora was instrumental in launching the development of the ABMS CertLink™ platform. Participating Member Boards will have the opportunity to build and pilot longitudinal assessment models with the goal to offer immediate, real-time feedback as to knowledge proficiency and gaps.

“ABMS and the Boards Community are grateful to Dr. Nora for her visionary leadership, and her unfailing faith and conviction in our mission to truly set higher standards for better care,” said ABMS Board of Directors Chair, John Moorhead, MD. “Her passion for Board Certification, our social responsibility and our desire to grow and evolve to better meet the needs of today’s physicians and patients are unparalleled, and her impact on the Boards Community will be lasting.”
