University of Kansas School of Medicine Joins ABMS Multi-Specialty Portfolio Program

University of Kansas School of Medicine Physicians to Obtain Maintenance of Certification Credit for Engaging in Quality Improvement Initiatives

The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has announced that the University of Kansas (KU) School of Medicine is now participating in the ABMS Multi-Specialty Portfolio Program™ (Portfolio Program). Physicians affiliated with the KU School of Medicine and The University of Kansas Hospital and who are Board Certified by one of the 21 of 24 ABMS Member Boards participating in the Portfolio Program may now receive Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credit for their engagement in quality improvement (QI) work at the institution.

“The University of Kansas Hospital is excited to participate in this very important program. We already have physicians who are very active in quality and safety initiatives such as VTE reduction, LEAN process improvement, and individual projects through our Quality Academy,” explained Timothy Williamson, MD, Associate Professor, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, KU School of Medicine, and Vice President for Patient Safety at The University of Kansas Hospital. “We believe participating in the Portfolio Program will make their involvement in initiatives even more robust, and in addition to the great benefits of their work to our patients, will allow them to get credit toward recertification for their time and effort.”

The KU School of Medicine, the only medical school in the state of Kansas, serves communities and patients across the entire state. Approximately 1,300 Board Certified physicians throughout the University’s health system of hospitals and clinics are now eligible for Improvement in Medical Practice (Part IV) MOC credit if actively engaged in approved QI activities.

“We are pleased to have the University of Kansas School of Medicine, The University of Kansas Hospital, and other affiliated organizations be part of the ABMS Portfolio Program,” noted David W. Price, MD, FAAFP, FACEHP, Executive Director of the Portfolio Program. “Their QI and patient safety programs reflect their commitment to improving patient care and truly impact the lives of patients and families throughout the state. The KU School of Medicine’s participation in the Portfolio Program will further broaden, enhance, and recognize their physicians’ engagement in systemic practice improvement activities, just as Portfolio Program participation has in a variety of hospitals, health care systems, and organizations across the country.”

The University’s Portfolio Program is administered by the KU School of Medicine’s Office of Continuing Medical Education, with QI activities reviewed by the Performance Improvement Committee of the Medical Staff at The Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City and the QI/Patient Safety Committee of the Wichita Graduate Medical Education Committee (for projects based in Wichita and Salina). QI activities with meaningful participation by affiliate faculty, including inpatient activities at the various teaching hospitals as well as ambulatory care activities in the various clinics, will be part of the Portfolio Program.

“We have designed the program to develop meaningful quality improvement activities that improve patient care,” stated Susan K. Pingleton, MD, FACP, Master FCCP, Associate Dean, Continuing Education/Professional Development, Professor of Medicine, KU School of Medicine. “Our program also serves as a valuable resource for practicing physicians needing to complete Part IV MOC credit.”

To date, the Portfolio Program has helped engage more than 9,000 physicians in practice improvement initiatives at hospitals and health systems across the country, many showing improvement in care outcomes, and has recognized their participation with MOC-eligible credit. Since its inception, 1,700-plus improvement efforts have been completed by Portfolio Program participants.
