On behalf of the Governance Committee of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), ABMS is seeking nominations for several public member positions on the ABMS Board of Directors and committees. Nomination materials for the following positions are to be submitted no later than Monday, December 2, 2019. The nominations will be collated for review by the Governance Committee during their December meeting.
The ABMS recognizes the benefits inherent within a diverse community of officers, directors, representatives and committee members. In a desire to reflect this diversity, the ABMS seeks individuals with varied experiences, perspectives and backgrounds to include minorities and women. Nominations of public members in all career phases are encouraged.
ABMS Board of Directors: (2) Public Members
Criteria:
- Candidates should be able to represent the broad public interest and offer insight and expertise reflecting a firm understanding of, and support for, ABMS’ mission (available at www.abms.org).
- Candidates must have:
- an understanding of the relationship between medicine and health care, and knowledge of medical education, training, and certification;
- in-depth knowledge and expertise which supplements that otherwise represented on the Board of Directors such as: business and finance, health policy, information technology used in health care settings, healthcare management, quality improvement science, patient advocacy, or marketing; and
- skills and experience that will help the ABMS achieve its strategic agenda.
Committee on Certification (COCERT): (1) Public Member
Purpose:
COCERT has oversight of policies and procedures related to initial certification, subspecialty certification, and the focused practice designation.
Criteria:
- Candidates must have experience with programs and processes for one or more of the following as it relates to initial certification:
- Professionalism;
- Graduate medical education and training; and/or
- The assessment of knowledge, judgment, and skills (e.g. participation in the development of exams for initial certification).
- The Public Member nominee must represent the public and is not a physician.
Ethics and Professionalism Committee (EPCOM): (1) Public Member
Purpose:
EPCOM provides guidance on policies and procedures related to the ethics and professionalism of physicians certified by the ABMS Member Boards.
Criteria:
- Candidates must
- Demonstrate integrity, credibility, trustworthiness, active participation, ability to handle conflict constructively, strong interpersonal skills, and the willingness to move forward on initiatives and programs;
- Have experience with State Medical Boards and their disciplinary process;
- Have experience with Member Board decision-making regarding professionalism for determinations of eligibility and disqualification; or
- Have an interest or experience in health care ethics and professionalism.
- The Public Member nominee must represent the public and is not a physician.
Nomination Process
ABMS appreciates your careful consideration of the request for nominations. To facilitate the efforts of the Governance Committee during its deliberations, the following forms need to be completed for each nominee. Please note the forms are now completed online. - Nominees are to complete a Service Application that includes a brief statement of interest, and submit an abbreviated Curriculum Vitae (a CV without presentations or publications – 2 page limit).
- Nominators are to complete a Nominator Cover Sheet that includes a brief statement of support.

Time Commitment
Public Members of the ABMS Board of Directors and committee members will serve an initial term of three (3) years and are eligible to serve two (2) consecutive terms.
The ABMS Board of Directors meets three times each year. Board meetings are generally at least two full days in duration; preparation and participation is expected. ABMS committees meet one to two times per year at the ABMS Offices in Chicago and have several conference calls during the year. Preparation and participation in committee activities are expected. A record of committee member attendance and participation will be maintained by the ABMS staff.
