The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) recognizes that individuals in today’s health care environment face unprecedented change and uncertainty. As the nation’s oldest and largest organization responsible for the creation of standards overseeing physician certification in the United States, ABMS remains committed to maintaining high standards for physicians and medical specialists who become board certified in a specialty or subspecialty (diplomates).
ABMS will continue to collaborate with its 24 Member Boards in supporting diplomates as they provide patient care that is grounded in science and is consistent with the standards of knowledge, skills, and judgment established within each specialty. ABMS Member Board diplomates practice medicine with a shared commitment to professionalism that prioritizes patient welfare, fosters the advancement of non-partisan science and technology, advances clinical competence, and upholds integrity in practice. ABMS is confident that diplomates will continue to adhere to these ideals, even during challenging times.
ABMS Member Boards’ policies and certification standards are designed to hold all diplomates to uniform standards, reflecting what is most important to the practice of each medical specialty. Patients and the public can be assured that no matter where they live or seek medical care, certification by an ABMS Member Board will remain a reliable indicator of medical expertise and trustworthiness. ABMS remains steadfast in its mission to improve health care through high standards for physician board certification and the promotion of excellent care for every patient.
