Michael R. Nelson, MD, PhD

Chair-Elect

Dr. Michael Nelson is the President of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Board of Directors, and Chief of the Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Division at the University of Virginia. He serves as a member of the ABMS Board of Directors, and is an outgoing member and Chair of the Audit Committee. He also served as a member of the Vision for the Future Commission on Continuing Certification.

Dr. Nelson received his MD and PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Virginia before entering active-duty military service. He has served as a program director, department chief, Director of Army Graduate Medical Education and Chief Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General, Director of Education, Training and Research at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and vice chair of the ACGME Allergy and Immunology Review Committee. Dr. Nelson retired from the U.S. Army in 2019 after 25 years of distinguished service.

Dr. Nelson has consistently advocated for the specialty of allergy and immunology on a national scale through advisory committee and task force service for the FDA, AMA, and USP.

Dr. Nelson is certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, and he is both participating in and meeting all requirements for continuing certification.
