New directory provides greater access to resources for physicians in delivering a high standard of patient care
CHICAGO – January 22, 2018 – The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) continues to conduct activities in support of its mission to serve the public and the medical profession by improving the quality of health care through setting professional standards for lifelong certification in partnership with its Member Boards. As part of that commitment, ABMS announced today the launch of its new ABMS Continuing Certification Directory™, offering enhanced benefits for both Continuing Medical Education (CME) providers and Board Certified diplomates seeking Maintenance of Certification (MOC) credit.
The ABMS Continuing Certification Directory (Directory), formerly known as the ABMS MOC Directory, provides continuing certification resources for diplomates and CME stakeholders. It offers a more intuitive user experience and improved search functionality through enhanced search criteria, an ability to filter by provider, and inclusion of various resources to better support ABMS Board Certified physicians seeking practice-relevant, accredited CME activities that help meet their Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment MOC requirements.
Activities indexed in the Directory are approved by one or more ABMS Member Boards and incorporate the core competencies assessed for continuing certification, as well as reflect the latest best practices, evidence-based guidelines, and educational initiatives designed to support the development of high-functioning physicians.
“The ABMS Continuing Certification Directory is an example of ABMS’ commitment to innovate and improve the continuing certification process,” stated ABMS President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Hawkins, MD. “The Directory offers a single platform for Board Certified physicians to obtain high-quality, CME activities that cover multiple specialties. Its updated search and navigation capabilities will greatly improve the user experience for diplomates as well as provide CME providers access to additional continuing certification information and resources.”
During the past two years, the Directory has increased its inventory and now indexes 600-plus activities from more than 60 CME providers nationwide for ABMS Member Board diplomates. The Directory includes a wide variety of activities addressing emerging issues such as physician well-being and safe opioid prescribing initiatives.
“This Directory expands the overall inventory of practice-relevant activities for physicians participating in continuing certification and offers more dynamic customization to adapt to the changing practice of medicine and their needs,” explained Mira Irons, MD, ABMS Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs. “This unique platform also allows us to share and facilitate support for broader national health initiatives, which is very exciting.”
In addition to its benefits to Board Certified physicians, the Directory offers CME providers a centralized process with a single pathway to seek MOC approvals from one or more Member Boards and to expand their reach to a larger physician audience. Additional benefits for CME providers include an MOC Approval Statement, ABMS Continuing Certification logo, and an additional dissemination channel for the CME programming outside of their membership. CME providers that wish to submit accredited activities for consideration by participating ABMS Member Boards can now do so at http://continuingcertification.org.
